The Canadian government will double the amount to be claimed from the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit from $500 to $1,000. The change will be effective for the 2014 tax year and will provide tax relief for another 850,000 families in addition to the 1.4 million families it currently serves. “This is great news for the parents of students of our multitude of dance programs,” says Ashley Daychak, artistic director at Performing Dance Arts. “It shows the commitment of the Canadian government to really reward active children and give their parents more incentive to keep them active. Even if it’s something like our recreational dance programs or part-time dance programs, being active makes a noticeable difference in a child’s energy and focus.”
Daychak explains that the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit will also be refundable, which will save costs for parents and allow them to put and keep multiple children in different activities. Many activities qualify for this tax credit, including soccer, hockey, sailing, horseback riding, and, of course, dance.
“Making physical activity more affordable for kids is a blessing, and having them try something like our dance lessons in Maple, along with all these other activities, is great for teaching accountability and teamwork,” Daychak concludes. “And now that mom and dad can save a buck, it encourages parents even more to keep their kids active in activities such as the recreational dance programs and part-time dance programs we offer at Performing Dance Arts.”
