If you’re considering enrolling your child in hip hop dance classes, you’re making a great choice! Hip hop dance is known for its fun, upbeat style, and it works as part of an overall healthier, active lifestyle for your child. At our hip hop dance studio, we teach kids of all ages and skill levels how to perform different moves and techniques, so they can create and participate in lively and energetic routines. Here are a few popular hip hop dance moves your child will learn.
Popping and Locking
This dance move is one of the staple moves of hip hop. It is a move that is largely improvised, which gives dancers the freedom to create their own style. The basics, however, include alternating between relaxing the arms, legs, and torso, and then popping these parts in quick motions. Once that body part is popped, the dancer will lock that spot, and relax and move another part.
Rapper DeAndre Cortez Way, also known as Soulja Boy, popularized this dance move. There are many fun viral videos online that show how the dance moves go, in fact, your child may already know how to do this dance. Our classes are fun and creative, and we always stay up to date on emerging dance trends.
Perhaps the most popular hip hop dance move of them all is the moonwalk. This dance was created by the king of pop, Michael Jackson, during his performance of Billie Jean in 1983. Since then, dancers have been mimicking this incredible trick. While the dancer’s feet appear to be walking forward, their entire body actually moves backwards. With time and practice, your child could learn this iconic move!
The Running Man
Ever run on the spot? This dance isn’t much different, yet it is one of the most enjoyable hip hop dances out there. It involves the basic running motion, but the arms and knees bend and move in an exaggerated motion as the dancer remains in the same spot.
